Who we are

SkiWhen (skiwhen.com) is a ski crowd forecast site based in Washington State, USA. Questions about privacy: hello@skiwhen.com.

What we collect

Browsing the site: we don't ask for or collect any personal information. There are no accounts and no ads. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookie-free and doesn't track you (more below).

The Friday email: if you sign up, we keep your email address, your first name if you give it, the area you picked on the site (if any) and the date you signed up. That's it.

Check-ins: lift line, parking and snow reports are anonymous. We store the mountain, your answers and the time. We don't store your IP address or location; to stop spam we use a scrambled, one-way code made from your IP address that changes every day and can't be turned back into it. Check-ins are deleted after 3 days. We keep anonymous hourly totals per mountain (for example "12 reports, average line 10 minutes, lot full at 9:15") with nothing that identifies anyone, to learn lift-line and parking patterns and to grade our forecasts on the accuracy scorecard.

Alerts: if you turn on alerts, your browser gives us a push address (a long random link from your browser's push service, like Google or Apple), plus the area and ski pass you picked. We use it only to send SkiWhen alerts. Turn alerts off and it's deleted.

Group polls: we store the poll options, votes and any first name you choose to show. Your browser keeps a random code so you can change your vote. Polls are deleted after 30 days.

Trip boards: if you start a family trip board, we store what's on it: the trip name, how many adults and kids, the city you'd drive from, the mountain-and-date ideas, any lodging or flight prices you type, votes, the first names you choose to show and notes. Anyone with the board's link can see and change it. Boards are deleted 180 days after their last change.

If you email us: we keep your message and address so we can reply.

How we use it

Only to run SkiWhen: to send the emails you asked for, answer your messages, and keep the site secure and working. We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Cookies and similar tech

SkiWhen itself sets no cookies.

Your area, your ski pass, your home city, drive, weekend and kids settings, packing list ticks, family milestones, your poll votes and name, and any ski days you log for Season Wrapped are saved only in your own browser (local storage) so the site remembers them next time. Unless you sign in, they never leave your device and we can't see them. Clear it anytime by clearing your browser's site data, or just pick a different area.

Our hosting and security provider, Cloudflare, may set a strictly necessary security cookie to block bots and attacks. It isn't used for tracking or advertising.

Visitor counts: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages are popular. It sets no cookies, doesn't use your browser's storage, doesn't build a profile of you and doesn't follow you to other sites. We only see totals, like page views per day.

Because we only use strictly necessary storage, there's no cookie banner to click. If we ever add advertising or tracking analytics, we'll update this page first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Who else is involved

  • Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it briefly processes your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and stop attacks.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views. A small script from Cloudflare (static.cloudflareinsights.com) loads on each page and sends Cloudflare the page address, referring site, browser type and timing. No cookies and no personal profile.
  • Calendar subscriptions: if you add a SkiWhen calendar, your calendar app downloads a public file from skiwhen.com. We don't know who subscribes.
  • Cloudflare D1 (Cloudflare's database) stores the email list, check-ins and polls.
  • Our email sending service (when the Friday email starts going out) will receive subscriber addresses only to send the emails.
  • Fonts are served from skiwhen.com itself, so no font service sees your visit.
  • Affiliate links: if you click a shopping link, the store and its affiliate network (such as AvantLink) or a lodging site like Booking.com may set their own cookies on their site to credit the sale. SkiWhen doesn't receive your personal details from them.

Weather and road data come from public sources (the National Weather Service, Open-Meteo, WSDOT, ODOT TripCheck, Caltrans and DriveBC). We fetch that data ourselves; your browser doesn't contact them and we send them nothing about you.

Emails and unsubscribing

Every SkiWhen email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribe and we stop emailing you. We only email people who signed up.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep subscriber emails until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. You can ask to see, correct or delete anything we hold about you by emailing hello@skiwhen.com. We'll respond within 30 days. This applies wherever you live, including California, Canada and Quebec.

Kids

SkiWhen isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has signed up, email us and we'll delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and we keep the information we hold to a minimum. No system is perfectly secure, but if something ever went wrong with your information, we'd tell you.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. For anything significant, we'll also tell subscribers by email.
